- 6 pounds apples about 12 large or 18 medium, peeled
- 1 tbsp nutmeg
- 2 tbsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp ginger
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup water
Cut apples into cubes, discarding the seeds and inner core. Put into crock pot.
Add remaining ingredients to crock pot.
Cook on high for one hour. Stir occasionally.
Reduce heat to low and continue cooking for another 6 hours.
If apples are not yet completely softened, continue cooking.
For chunky applesauce, mash with a potato masher to desired consistency. If you prefer smooth applesauce, use a blender.
Adjust the spices. Add sweetener, if desired.
Notes:
The extra sweetener is optional. We find that the longer cooking time brings out the natural sweetness of the apples, so don't use extra sugars.
This recipe is easy to adjust for larger or smaller amounts.
