Sorbet is Vegan – Try These Frozen Fruit Sorbet Recipes

Can you make a healthy, vegan dessert everyone will love in just minutes? Yes! Our frozen fruit sorbet recipes come together in 5 to 20 minutes. And, while sorbet is vegan, ours takes healthy to a new high.

Traditional sorbet contains added sugars, lots of added sugars. Ours uses fruit for that creamy sweetness that most sorbets beg for. In fact, many people prefer the fat-laden ice creams for their creamy texture, over traditional sorbets which usually host sugars in place of some or all of the fat of ice cream.

You see, the difference is in the sugars and fats. Ice cream, as noted by the cream in its title, is a milk-based product, usually made with full fat. Traditionally, sorbet hosts granulated or superfine sugar in the unhealthiest of ways.

For more information on refined sugars and the potential health problems, check out our article on sugar addiciton.

Forget the Sugars, Our Frozen Fruit Sorbet Recipes Don’t Need Them!

Most commercially available sorbet is loaded with refined sugars. Americans and many other cultures eat far too many of these harmful ingredients which lead to health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Also, you should note that not all refined sugars are considered vegan. But sorbet is vegan when made according to our recipes. Indeed, each of our frozen fruit sorbet recipes is entirely plant-based vegan.

But Fruit Has Sugar

Yes, that’s true. But those sugars differ from refined sugar in some important ways. First, fruit sugar in whole fruit is eaten with the fiber of the fruit. Fiber helps to slow the digestion of the fruit sugar, avoiding the sugar spike and drop that occurs with refined sugars.

Secondly, those refined sugars are all or mostly empty calories. Fruit sugars contain important minerals and vitamins that our bodies utilize for our health.

Note: Drinking fruit juice is also not recommended by most nutritionists. Although it does contain those minerals and vitamins, it lacks that all-important fiber to slow the digestion of sugar. If you choose to use fruit in smoothies and other drinks, try blending the entire fruit (minus the skin for those fruits that require it) to take advantage of the fiber, too.

Fruit Sweetness

Most people prefer to eat fresh bananas when they are yellow. Some even like them best while still slightly green. But here’s the secret to the sweetness factor. Most fruit develops an increase in sugar content as it ripens. That’s why your strawberries seem almost sour if they are quite firm than they do when nearly overripe. Nature prepares the fruit to feed the seeds it nurtures within and those sugars are food energy for the developing seeds.

Use this to your advantage. Enjoy fresh fruits while still quite firm or slightly softened. When they start to overripen, we put them in a usable portion in the freezer. Bananas are first peeled (our goats love banana peels and so does the compost bin). Other types of fruit are packaged according to how we expect to use them.

This makes these smoothies go together in as little as 5 minutes. What a great way to entertain your guests or enjoy an evening dessert with your family. With very little processing and hardly any clean-up, you have an incredible dessert for those warm summer days and evenings.

Our Sorbet is Vegan, But Are They Good?

Thus far, everyone who has tried our frozen fruit sorbet recipes loves them. Yes, even those who are not banana fans find that the other fruit helps flavor the bananas and gives that creaminess, too. While I cannot promise that preference from everyone, I do believe that you, your family, and your friends will count one or more of these among their favorites.

Do I need an ice cream maker or special equipment?

No, you won’t. The only equipment needed for our frozen fruit sorbet recipes is a high-speed blender. The three that I recommend are shown below. A good blender, such as one of these, will last you for many years.
