Uncommon Vegan Ingredients

Nutritional Yeast

Nutritional yeast is an inactive form of yeast popularly used in vegan cooking for its cheesy and savory flavor. It has a deactivated form of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, a single-celled organism, meaning it cannot froth or bubble like active yeast used in baking. Nutritionally, it is an excellent source vegetarian source of B-complex vitamins along with other numerous minerals such as zinc, selenium, manganese, and copper. This powdered ingredient can be added to many dishes to give a rich and creamy flavor without any fat or cholesterol.

Agar-Agar

It is a vegan-friendly product, derived from seaweed and phycocolloids from red algae, similar to gelatin but with significantly different characteristics. It has a much higher gel strength than most animal sources of gelatin and has the ability to suspend particles. This makes it ideal for creating vibrant dishes by combining solid and liquid textures together in one dish. It can also be used as a vegan substitute for gelatin, making it a much healthier choice.

Liquid Smoke

Liquid smoke is an all-natural condiment that creates a strong smoky flavor without having to cook with a smoker. Crafted from real wood hickory chips, liquid smoke has been the secret ingredient in many of your favorite recipes for years! Simply add the correct amount to your food before cooking for a delicious and intense smoky flavor. It’s also naturally low in sodium and easy to use, making it an ideal alternative to spending hours cooking over hot coals or using an electric smoker.
