Health Benefits

Nutrient-Rich Ingredients

Vegan apple cider donuts are typically made using a combination of whole wheat flour, apple cider, light brown sugar, and applesauce. Whole wheat flour retains the bran and germ, providing more fiber, vitamins, and minerals than refined flour. Applesauce adds natural sweetness and moisture while being a good source of dietary fiber and antioxidants. These ingredients contribute to the nutritional value of these delectable treats.

Lower in Fat and Cholesterol

Traditional donuts are usually deep-fried, which can significantly increase their fat content. Vegan apple cider donuts, on the other hand, are often baked, reducing the amount of fat and cholesterol in the final product. Baking also helps retain more nutrients from the ingredients, making these donuts a healthier option.

Reduced Allergenic Potential

Vegan apple cider donuts are free from common allergens such as dairy and eggs, making them suitable for individuals with food sensitivities or allergies. By using plant-based alternatives, such as almond milk or soy milk, you can enjoy these treats without worrying about lactose intolerance or egg allergies.

Ingredient Tips

Choose the Right Flour

Opt for whole wheat pastry flour or a blend of whole wheat and cake flour for a balance of nutrition and texture. These flours provide a heartier and slightly nuttier taste compared to all-purpose flour alone.

Quality Apple Cider

Look for high-quality, organic apple cider that is free from additives or preservatives. The cider should have a strong apple flavor to impart a distinctive taste to the donuts.

Natural Sweeteners

Instead of refined sugar, consider using natural sweeteners like maple syrup, agave nectar, or coconut sugar. These alternatives add a unique flavor profile and provide more nutrients than white sugar.

Applesauce as a Binding Agent

Unsweetened applesauce acts as an excellent binding agent and adds moisture to the donuts. Choose a smooth and unsweetened applesauce to keep the donuts light and fluffy.

Spices and Flavors

Enhance the taste of your vegan apple cider donuts with a blend of warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. These spices complement the apple flavor and add a cozy, autumnal touch.

Ingredients

Let's gather the ingredients!

Donuts

  • ¾ cups cake flour sifted
  • ¾ cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon ground
  • ½ cup apple cider
  • ¼ cup soy milk or other plant-based milk
  • 3 tbsp applesauce unsweetened
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil melted

Topping

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 tbsp coconut oil melted

Instructions

Let's Begin!

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray a donut pan with non-stick spray. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the cake flour, whole wheat flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
  • Pour in the apple cider, soy milk, applesauce, and melted coconut oil. Mix well with a large spoon to combine, be careful not to over-mix.
  • Spoon the batter into the donut pan, or use a piping bag with a large tip to pipe it evenly into each donut cavity, filling about 3/4 of the way full.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden brown and they spring back when lightly pressed.
  • Cool in the pan for about 2 minutes, then invert onto a cooling rack. Continue with all of the remaining batters.
  • While they are baking, make the topping: Stir together the sugar and cinnamon in a bowl, then melt the vegan butter or coconut oil in a separate bowl.
  • Brush each donut with a little vegan butter or coconut oil on all sides, then dip into the sugar-cinnamon mixture to coat well. You could also just brush the top and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar instead of coating the entire donut.
  • Enjoy! They are best served right away but can be kept in an airtight container for 2 days.
