But fear not; even if you’re whipping up a batch of homemade cream puffs with luscious whipped cream or cream puff filling, these recipes are straightforward, no matter what size batch you’re making.

Initially, these cream puffs are not vegan, but in this recipe blog post, we will make these small batches perfect for vegetarians.

Cream puffs are usually non-vegan. This time we were using plant based or vegan ingredients. And also they are easy to find they are mostly in your kitchen.

1. Butter

  • Make sure they are vegan butter, dairy free, and non-dairy.

2. Natural Sweetener

  • Use raw sugar, organic, or unrefined sugar. They are vegan I highly recommend Bob’s Red Mill brandBe sure not to use icing sugar.

3. Kosher salt

  • Use to balance the taste of the sweetness of these cream puffs.

4. All-purpose flour

  • Feel free to use almond flour, coconut flour, corn flour, or rice flour. To make this recipe gluten-free use certified gluten-free flour.

5. Flax seeds

  • As a vegan recipe, instead of using eggs use 1 tablespoon of flax seeds plus 3 tablespoons of water. Or feel free to use egg vegan substitutes such as aquafaba, chia egg, applesauce, etc.

6. Powdered Sugar

  • Make sure they are organic I highly recommended Bob’s Red Mill brand. They produce organic and vegan products.

7. Instant Vanilla Pudding

  • You can make homemade vanilla pudding and there is a storebought. If you prefer to buy a vanilla pudding choose an instant vanilla pudding. Make a habit to check all the labels.

8. Plant-based Milk

  • Feel free to use your favorite unsweetened milk, non-dairy milk, or plant-based milk.

  • To keep these vegan cream puffs plant-powered, ensure that all store-bought wet or dry ingredients that you use are completely made with plant-based ingredients or organic. I suggest Bob’s Red Mill brand as they produce organic products and always check the labels.

Vegan Cream Puff Recipe

Learn How to Make Oh-so-Puff Cream Puffs!

 

These are easy to make. You only need an oven, stainless or wooden spoon, baking or parchment paper, saucepan, and measuring cup. They are done in 35 minutes–and tada, you have an oh-so-puff cream puff on hand!

1. Preheat the oven temperature to 425° F.

 

2. Melt the vegan butter, sugar, and kosher salt in a saucepan with water.

 

3. Add the flour and flax seed mixture gradually and whisk with a spoon until they combine for 1-2 minutes. Set them aside and let them cool.

 

4. Scoop the dough with a cookie scoop and then place it on a tray lined with parchment paper or baking paper, and bake for at least 11-12 minutes at the correct oven temperature or till it turns golden brown. Transfer them to the cooling rack to let it cool completely.

 

5. Mix the instant vanilla pudding or lemon curd in a measuring cup if preferred. Refrigerate till they set.

 

6. Scoop the pudding or lemon curd into each cream puff using a stainless or wooden spoon. You can also use a piping bag when filling your puff pastry. Before serving, sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Recipe Note

  • Soggy Pastry: To prevent this, let the cream puffs cool completely before filling them with vanilla pudding or lemon curd.
  • Collapse Pastry: Avoid under-baking and ensure the puff pastry is almost hollow. If the pastry is moist, let it cool for a minute.

Storing Tips

  • Refrigerate uncovered, but I highly suggest serving them after baking as they are best served in the oven.

For The Pastry:

  • 4 oz water
  • 5 tbsps vegan butter
  • 1 tbsp sugar unrefined or any natural powdered sugar
  • tsp kosher salt
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour or use certified gluten-free flour
  • 1 tbsp flax seeds stir in 3 tbsp of water
  • 1 tsp powdered sugar organic

For The Filling:

  • ½ package vanilla pudding instant (Bob's Red Mill brand), homemade, or alternatively use lemon curd
  • 1 cup milk unsweetened, plant-based, non-dairy milk

Instructions
 

Oh-so-puff Cream Puff:

  • 1. Preheat the oven to 425° F.
  • In a saucepan, melt the vegan butter, sugar, and kosher salt with water.
  • Add gradually the flour and flax seed mixture and whisk with a spoon till they completely combine or at least 1-2 minutes. Set them aside and let them cool.
  • On a parchment-lined baking sheet, scoop the dough with a cookie scoop.
  • Bake for at least 11-12 minutes or till they turn to a golden brown. Transfer them to the cooling rack.

Filled with:

  • In a measuring cup, mix the instant vanilla pudding or lemon curd if prefer. Refrigerate till they set.

This deliciously lemon curd makes a flavorful pudding or pie filling. We like it in Phyllo crust as tartlets. You might need to double this recipe! Inspired by my Mom's lemon curd recipe made with sugar and milk. I modified the amounts to create a truly healthy vegan version.

Ingredients
  

  • ¾ cup Swerve granulated
  • 2 tablespoon cornstarch
  • ¾ cup almond milk or other plant-based milk
  • ½ cup lemon juice about 2-3 lemons
  • 3 teaspoons lemon zest use a little extra for more lemony flavor
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric optional for color

Instructions
 

  • In a small pot, whisk together the Swerve and cornstarch.
  • Mix in the almond milk, lemon juice, lemon zest, and turmeric.
  • Cook over medium heat, whisking frequently, until the curd thickens, about 5 minutes. Use care to whisk vigorously as it thickens to ensure a smooth curd.
  • Remove from heat and pour into a glass or stainless container to cool. Enjoy warm or store in the fridge for up to 1 week. It will thicken more as it cools.
